Parish Pattern Cutlery, what is it?

Cutlery is often massively overlooked when it comes to tableware and food presentation. Plates, glasses and mugs are almost always covered. But what about the fork, needed to fully enjoy the meal? Or the teaspoon, that allows you to stir and adjust your tea to perfection? What’s the difference between 18/10 silver cutlery and 18/0? We’re here to answer all your questions about knives and forks.

Cooksmill stocks a wide range of cutlery, sure to suit every venue and establishment. We have one of the largest selections of Parish Pattern 18/0 Stainless Steel Cutlery. Parish Pattern is the traditional catering and restaurant style of cutlery, with a range of designs.

What does 18/0 Stainless Steel Mean?

Parish Pattern 18/0 Cutlery

18/0 means that there is 18% chromium and 0% nickel in the cutlery set. 18% chromium is the standard amount in all types of cutlery and is a very hard and tough metal, resistant to both damage and stains. Chromium is what gives the cutlery its weight and durability. Nickel also has corrosion-resistant properties that provide a protective layer to the metal it's coated on. As a result of this, 18/0 stainless steel cutlery has a dull sheen and is a little more liable to rust and stain. However, 18/0 is much cheaper than 18/10 and is still very sturdy and resistant to corrosion and blemishes. 18/0 flatware is the first choice for home cutlery and casual dining atmospheres. 18/0 is usually dishwasher safe as well, saving time for those who want a quick solution for washing the cutlery between uses.

Designs of Parish Pattern Cutlery

Parish Patterns comes from Sheffield. Traditionally, there were “mesters” who would buy cutlery from companies that stamped out spoons and forks. Knives were made by cutlers. These patterns eventually became known as Parish Patterns because they were available to anyone from the stamping companies in the local parish/district. Now, there are several types of Parish Patterns available, to suit different needs. Cooksmill stocks the 5 most popular designs.

Kings Cutlery is named after the famous Prince Regent and soon to be King George the IV. The 19th century king only ruled for 10 years, but his extravagant lifestyle and contributions to both fashion and taste led to this pattern being named after him.
